The Noble Savage

$36.94

In this second volume of the unparalleled exposition of Rousseau’’s life and works, Cranston completes and corrects the story told in Rousseau’’s Confessions, and offers a vivid, entirely new history of his most eventful and productive years. Luckily for us, Maurice Cranston’’s The Noble Savage: Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 1754-1762 has managed to craft a highly detailed account of eight key years of Rousseau’’s life in such a way that we can both understand and even, on occasion, sympathize. –Olivier Bernier, Wall Street Journal Maurice Cranston (1920-1993), a distinguished scholar and recipient of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of John Locke, was professor of political science at the London School of Economics. His numerous books include The Romantic Movement and Philosophers and Pamphleteers, and translations of Rousseau’’s The Social Contract and Discourse on the Origins of Inequality.

$27.5

In the first volume of his trilogy, noted political philosopher Maurice Cranston draws from original manuscript sources to trace Rousseau’s life from his birth in provincial obscurity in Geneva, through his youthful wanderings, to his return to Geneva in 1754 as a celebrated writer and composer. [An] admirable biography which is as meticulous, calm, reasonable, and judicious as its subject is passionate and tumultuous. –Keith Michael Baker, Washington Post Book World The definitive biography, as scholarly as it is entertaining. — The Economist Exceptionally fresh . . . . [Cranston] seems to know exactly what his readers need to know, and thoughtfully enriches the background–both physical and intellectual–of Rousseau’s youthful peregrinations . . . . He makes the first part of Rousseau’s life as absorbing as a picaresque novel. His fidelity to Rousseau’s ideas and to his life as it was lived is a triumph of poise. –Naomi Bliven, The New Yorker The most outstanding achievement of Professor Cranston’s own distinguished career. –Robert Wokler, Times Literary Supplement Maurice Cranston (1920-1993), a distinguished scholar and recipient of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of John Locke, was professor of political science at the London School of Economics. His numerous books include The Romantic Movement and Philosophers and Pamphleteers, and translations of Rousseau’s The Social Contract and Discourse on the Origins of Inequality.

The Shadow

The Shadow

$7.2

Rated: PG13Synopsis: A crime fighter created in the 1930s and popularized in movies, pulp novels, and a radio show starring a young Orson Welles, The Shadow came back to life in 1994 in this slick, well-cast production. Alec Baldwin stars as Lamont Cranston, a murderous opium dealer reformed by a Tibetan mystic, who teaches him how to use his keen mental powers to manipulate others. As penance for his past misdeeds, Cranston masquerades as a degenerate New York City playboy by day and secretly plays the heroic Shadow by night, staving off evildoers with a network of agents and a cab-driving sidekick (Peter Boyle). A greater challenge arrives when Cranston must fight Shiwan Khan (John Lone), the final descendent of Genghis Khan, who has received training from the same Tibetan master who instructed Cranston. Shiwan plans to use atomic weapons to take over New York and then the world. The Solitary Self: Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Exile and Adversity

The Solitary Self: Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Exile and Adversity

$23.75

A monumental achievement, Maurice Cranston’s trilogy provides the definitive account of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s turbulent life. Now available in paperback, this final volume completes a masterful biography of one of the most important philosophers of all time. The Solitary Self traces the last tempestuous years of Rousseau’s life. The Solitary Self is a fitting coda to a magisterial work. Cranston . . . is a compelling stylist who narrates Rousseau’s tribulations with a mixture of compassion and dry humor. –Thomas Pavel, Wall Street Journal Cranston not only recreates for his readers a rounded view of Rousseau himself, he sets it firmly in the social and political context of Europe’s ancien regime. . . . An engrossing work of history. –John Gray, New Statesman Cranston’s painstaking archival research and lucid style yield the most detailed and thoroughly documented biography of Rousseau written in English. His epilogue masterfully sums up Rousseau’s importance as political philosopher and initiator of romantic sensibilities. — Choice Anyone curious about the paradoxes of a most paradoxical man will not go wrong by starting with this invaluable biography. –James Miller, Washington Post Book World As absorbing as a picaresque novel. –Naomi Bliven, New Yorker A monument of scholarship. . . . This amazing biography, like Boswell’s account of Johnson, recreates the daily life of Rousseau: what he did, who he saw, what he said, what he wrote. . . . We may be quite confident that we hold in our hands the authoritative account of this life. The definitive Rousseau. –Isaac Kramnick, New Republic Maurice Cranston (1920-1993), a distinguished scholarand recipient of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his biography of John Locke, was professor of political science at the London School of Economics. His numerous books include The Romantic Movement and Philosophers and Pamphleteers, and translations of Rousseau’s The Social Contract and Discourse on the Origins of Inequality.

On Toleration

On Toleration

$143.62

Is toleration a requirement of morality or a dictate of prudence? What limits are there to toleration? What is required of us if we are to promote a truly tolerant society? These themes–the grounds, limits, and requirements of toleration–are central to this book, which presents the W.B. Morrell Memorial Lectures on Toleration, given in 1986 at the University of York. Covering a wide range of practical and theoretical issues, the contributors–including F.A. Hayek, Maurice Cranston, and Karl Popper–consider the philosophical difficulties inherent in the concept as well as the practical problems of implementing a policy of toleration. Although the contributors differ in their conclusions about the grounds of toleration, they all share a belief in the importance of the concept both historically and in modern society.

By 1869, seventeen years after Zachariah Allen campaigned for a public water supply, the public voted in favor of introducing water into the city from the Pawtuxet River in Cranston. By 1900, it was clear that more, purer water was needed. A public law was approved on April 21, 1915, creating the Providence Water Supply Board and granting the power to condemn 14,800 acres to create the Situate Reservoir. Today the reservoir is the largest inland body of water in Rhode Island, supplying over 40 billion gallons of water to residents.

The Solitary Self

The Solitary Self

$45

In this third and final volume of his masterly biography, Maurice Cranston traces the last tempestuous years of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s life. From his brilliant authorship of the Confessions, the Dialogues, and the Reveries to his controversial religious views, from his notorious public quarrel with David Hume in England to his clandestine return to France, from his unsettled wanderings to his death in 1778 – these and other critical events in Rousseau’s most embattled years are detailed in this sympathetic yet balanced portrait. In 1762, with the condemnation of Emile and The Social Contract harried by both church and state, Rousseau fled Paris, seeking refuge in Neuchatel and England. Deemed a social outcast and beset by feelings of persecution and abuse, not wholly unwarranted, the philosopher turned in despair to the production of autobiographical works intended to reveal his essential innocence and integrity. Through this bitter introspection, Rousseau transformed his solitude into some of the most enduring literature of his time.

Multiple Paths to Ministry

In a rapidly changing congregational and professional environment, how will churches and their institutions of theological education prepare ministers for diverse contexts? Barker and Martin affirm the theological school’s continued role yet claim that American Protestantism can no longer rely on graduate theological schools as the sole educational institutions charged with providing curricula for theological study related to ministerial preparation. To support their thesis, the authors researched the graduate theological education programs of The Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (USA), the United Church of Christ, the United Church of Canada, and The United Methodist Church; and compiled essays that show powerful new models for successful ministry preparation. Contributors: Janet Silman, Carol Bell, Isaac McDonald, Richard Sales, Bert Affleck, Minka Shura Sprague, Glenn Miller, Ken McFayden, and Thomas Ray.
